Like several others, the app doesn’t have public chats. There are plenty of organisations and groups that use this, however, so you will eventually run into it on your own. We would like some more control over stuff like alerts because a lot of them are sent by this app, but it’s a really good experience otherwise.
Amino is a common chat room application similar to applications such as Band or Discord. There are a lot of forums for a variety of subjects, and if you want to, you can create your own. If you are into that kind of stuff, it’s a weirdly neat all-in-one-style chat.
On this list, Grouvi is a bit of a wild card. It’s new, not very common, and there’s not much we know about it.However, with a range of chats for a variety of subjects, it boasts a classic public chat experience. A movement towards tech-savvy topics such as ethical hacking or Linux seems to be present. This is certainly not some random app type chat room dating site. During our research, it wasn’t too active, but again, it’s very fresh and there aren’t a lot of users. Maybe it’s fun, maybe it isn’t, but only time will say. In the meantime, as of the moment of this article, the app is free with no advertisements or in-app purchases.
One of the most popular chat room apps on the list is Discord. It’s more for gamers rather than average folks.Regular folks, though, can use it as well. It’s just an app with a lot of features for a chat room, so don’t think you just have to use it for gaming. This one primarily dabbles in private chat rooms, but if you look for them, there are some public chats out there. Voice channels, direct messages between individual members, and you can enter as many servers as you want, are some other functions. It is totally free to access, too. Cosmetic extras like GIF emotes and the ability to use any emote on any server are only added to the $4.99 subscription.
One of the classic applications for chat rooms is ICQ.Over the years, it has undergone many shifts. These days, it now works as your regular chat apps do.You can send a message directly, video chat, and all that material. However, similar to the old Target or IRC facilities, it still provides random public chat rooms. Student talks, new ICQ users, people in their 30s, people in their 20s, people from different parts of the world, some late-nightchat rooms, and a lot more are available. MeetMe is a cross between a chat room app and a dating service. It has a lot of active users, but it’s not well distributed between the sexes. Thus, as a standalone dating site, it is not perfect. It’s a nice way to meet people, though, and you get into discussions with complete strangers so that the qualifications are technically met. However, it is one of the weaker choices on this list. For all ages, the app claims to be, and that’s ludicrous. Clearly, it is for adults only. Occasionally, it is appropriate, because the vast number of individuals increases the chances of finding interesting people. We’d probably suggest one of the nine other chat room apps first, though.
Zello is an app with dual purposes. It has a push-to-talk type walkie talkie feature that lets you interact with practically anybody on the fly. This one, however, also has a number of chat room style features as well. You can create public or private chat rooms with up to 6,000 users at once and you can use the PTT feature to actually speak to them in the style of ham radio. For your normal, old school Internet chat room experience, we don’t recommend this. It does have its own charms, though.
